A joint investigation between the Athens Police Department and the FBI led to the indictment of a former Athens High School student in an alleged plot to harm students and teachers.
News 19 reported that investigators believe Carson Butler, 18, conspired with others online.
Police said an online threat ultimately led to the arrest of Butler.
“Superintendent Beth Patton and school system staff stayed in constant communication with us and worked well with us to maintain school safety,” Athens Police Chief Anthony Pressnell said.
Butler has been in custody since June but was just indicted in mid-November. He is considered innocent until proven guilty.
