After a decorated one-year stint on the Plains in 2010, delivering the program’s second national championship and an undefeated season, Auburn athletics announced they will retire Cam Newton’s No. 2 jersey.

Newton became the Tigers’ third Heisman trophy winner after throwing for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns while adding 1,473 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns on the ground in 2010. He was the only player in the NCAA to have five 170+ yard games, and was the third player in NCAA FBS history to total 20 rushing and 20 passing touchdowns in a single season.

“Auburn will always be home to me,” Newton said. “The national championship we won in 2010 was a special moment, and to have my jersey retired alongside legends like Pat Sullivan, Bo Jackson, and Terry Beasley is an incredible honor that I'll cherish forever. War Eagle!"

Newton was drafted first overall by the Carolina Panthers in 2011 and spent 11 years with the franchise, bringing them a Super Bowl appearance in 2015 en route to a Most Valuable Player campaign. He was the Rookie of the Year in 2011. He holds the NFL record with the most seasons (five) with at least 3,000 yards passing and 500 rushing yards.

A retirement ceremony will be held before the Tigers' game against Georgia on October 11.

Newton's No. 2 jersey will join the likes of Pat Sullivan’s No. 7, Bo Jackson’s No. 34 and Terry Beasley’s No. 88 jerseys on the retirement wall.
