AUBURN — The Auburn Tigers are expected to improve at multiple positions this season and are supposed to be even stronger in an area they were solid in last season.

Auburn has a talented group of players to carry the football and is returning three of its running backs from last season, including Jarquez Hunter, who returned for his senior year.

Hunter led Auburn in rushing last season with 909 yards and seven touchdowns. The Tigers also bring back Damari Alston and Jeremiah Cobb, who ran for 320 and 172 yards, respectively, last year.

The Tigers did not make any additions to the running back room either through the transfer portal or their 2024 recruiting class. Offensive coordinator Derrick Nix is happy with what he has seen from the group, however.

"I think the guys at running back have been working really hard during training camp," Nix said. "I think these guys have been really consistent so far. We've asked a lot of them, to be tough in the run game, to protect, to catch the ball in the backfield."

Nix talked about Hunter taking charge in the room and setting an example for the younger guys.

"We're probably led by Jarquez (Hunter)," Nix said. "He's done a heck of a job of being a tackle breaker, taking hold of the offense and learning everything. He's been really consistent."

Nix also touched on Alston and how he has improved during the offseason.

"Damari Alston is probably right behind him (Hunter)," Nix said. "(He's) doing a great job of catching the ball in the backfield, protecting, carrying the football."

Nix is confident in Auburn's running backs and believes they can contribute to the team's offensive success this season.

"The whole group really has been doing a great job overall," Nix said. "I think they're going to be a plus for us going forward this season."

Auburn begins the season at home against the Alabama A&M Bulldogs on August 31 at 6:30 p.m. CT. ESPN+/SEC Network+ will carry the broadcast.
