On Sunday, heavy metal band Metallica announced Auburn University had won its inaugural marching band challenge.

In April, the band challenged marching bands across the country from high school to college to create performances incorporating our music into their shows.

The other finalists were Fresno State University, Iowa State University, University of Iowa, University of Texas at Austin and Western Illinois University.

In taking home the awards for the Division 1 level and Fan Favorite - Collegiate (across all divisions), the Auburn Marching Band won $85,000 in musical equipment furnished by Metallica and its sponsors.

Metallica gave away almost $200,000 in total donations to the winners across all divisions.

Two Alabama high schools were among the finalists for their respective levels.

Cleveland High School in Blount County was among five finalists for the Small High School division, while Pell City High School of St. Clair County was among five finalists in the Large High School division.
