While most of college football's talking heads have yet to respond to Alabama's 31-17 loss to Florida State on Saturday, ESPN "College Gameday" panelist Kirk Herbstreit offered a sneak preview of reaction during his call of the LSU-Clemson game later that evening.
Earlier in the day, Herbstreit followed outgoing ESPN personality Lee Corso's upset pick of FSU over Alabama by saying he expected the Seminoles to "play their hearts out" but picked Alabama to prevail.
"I think this is Florida State's opportunity after last year's 2-10 season, opportunity against a great opponent to prove to people that they're back to being the team that they expect to be," he said. "I think they play their hearts out. I just think Ryan Williams, the talent that they have, Ryan Grubb coming back, I think Bama wins it."
"I think the shocker of the day is this game right here: Alabama and Florida State," he said. "Both, how average Alabama looks and how dominant Florida State looked."
"Average and as lethargic as they could look," Herbstreit added. "And on the other end of that, Mike Norvell and Florida State — they showed up with an attitude. They were tired of hearing about 2-10. Give them all the credit in the world. They look like they're going to be a fun team to watch this year. But Alabama's got a lot of work to do."
