Former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones (D-Mountain Brook) may get a shot at a position that has eluded him throughout the Biden administration should Vice President Kamala Harris emerge victorious in November.
The half-term U.S. Senator was mentioned in an Axios report last week about a potential Harris presidency cabinet.
Jones was mentioned as a possible attorney general throughout the Biden transition in 2020, but President Joe Biden opted to appoint Merrick Garland to the post.
According to the report from Mike Allen and Jim VandeHei, Jones would be a favorable pick because even a Republican-controlled U.S. Senate would confirm him.
"Former Sen. Doug Jones of Alabama, a former U.S. attorney, could be confirmed to head Justice, even if Republicans win control of the Senate," the report said.
Jones served as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama from 1997 to 2001. He had an unlikely win for a Democrat in a 2017 special election to fill the vacancy left by Jeff Sessions, who then-President Donald Trump appointed to serve as attorney general. Jones defeated then-GOP nominee Roy Moore, giving him credentials as a prominent national Democrat.
He was defeated by the seat's current occupant, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn), in 2020, but he has since been a regular commentator on cable news.
