Two Alabama men spent Christmas behind bars at the Escambia County Jail after getting arrested for a litany of different criminal charges for allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs and other contraband into the Fountain Correctional Facility in Atmore.
Early on Tuesday, agents from the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) Law Enforcement Services Division (LESD) and the K9 Bureau, with assistance from the Atmore Police Department and the Poarch Creek Police Department, responded to reports of possible trespassers at the Atmore prison.
K9 handlers discovered the two suspects, Derrick Bean and Keith Davis, in a wooded area near the facility with a backpack. According to ADOC, the backpack contained approximately 448 grams of marijuana, 28 grams of methamphetamine, eight grams of cocaine, fentanyl, various cell phones and charging blocks.
The pair were immediately transported to the Escambia County Jail and charged with three counts of attempting to commit a controlled substance crime, prohibited activities, possession of a controlled substance, possession with Intent to distribute and possession of marijuana. Bean received additional charges of possession of a controlled substance and promoting prison contraband.
