Baldwin County Sheriff Huey "Hoss" Mack announced he is leaving his post in the late summer or early fall to take another job in Montgomery.
Mack, who has been sheriff since 2007, will be the new executive director of the Alabama Sheriffs Association.
In an internal memo obtained by 1819 News, Mack told others in the sheriff's office that the decision was not an easy one to make.
"This has not been an easy decision as I have been with this office since 1989 and an honor to serve as your Sheriff since 2007," Mack wrote. "I believe the time is right for me to make this move. It is a great opportunity for me to work with all of Alabama's 67 [sheriffs].
Mack has been very involved in the sheriff's association, even serving as president in 2014.
He told deputies and Baldwin County judges that he would work with everyone to ensure an easy transition.
Governor Kay Ivey will appoint the next Baldwin County Sheriff after Mack officially retires.
Mack has not responded to a media inquiry regarding the matter.
