Assistant District Attorney Ben Fuller has won the race for Shelby County District Court Judge, Place 3, defeating Jarred "Jay" Welborn.
Fuller has served as an assistant district attorney for over a decade.
According to the Shelby County Reporter, the unofficial poll results from election day show Fuller won with 9,167 votes at 52.19 percent, compared to Jarred "Jay" Welborn, who received 8,398 votes at 47.81 %.
"Shelby County is a special place, and it's filled with special people, and they showed up," Fuller said in a speech outside the Old Shelby County Courthouse, according to the Reporter. "I appreciate my opponent, Jared Welborn, and I appreciate Judge Erin Welborn so much in this race. They've done a great job, but we believed in our position. We believed in my qualifications, and we tried to keep it to that in the campaign, and I think that showed up with the voters of Shelby County tonight."
Welborn posted a message on his social media.
"Things don't always turn out like you hope. Sometimes, God has other plans. I want to say thank you to the Team Welborn family. We ran a hard campaign, and we worked our tails off. As much as we would have liked to have won this evening, it just was not in the cards. We lost by 769 votes. It's hard to fight usual runoff low voter turnout on top of rain. With only 9.7 % voter turnout in the judicial race, it was way lower than we expected," Welborn wrote.
"Thank you to everyone who had a hand in this campaign. I appreciate each and every one of you. We look forward to some rest, getting signs collected, and enjoying some family time. Again, Thank You," he said.
