Two assistant U.S. attorneys were appointed as “district election officers” for the upcoming general election in November by the Department of Justice (DOJ) last week.

Assistant U.S. Attorney John P. Hutchins, III will lead the DOJ’s nationwide Election Day program for the upcoming November 5 general election in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Alabama.

Hutchins has been appointed by the DOJ to serve as the district election officer for the Southern District of Alabama and will be responsible for “overseeing the district’s handling of election day complaints of voting rights concerns, threats of violence to election officials or staff, and election fraud, in consultation with DOJ headquarters in Washington,” according to the DOJ.

“Every citizen must be able to vote without interference or discrimination and to have that vote counted in a fair and free election. Similarly, election officials and staff must be able to serve without being subject to unlawful threats of violence. The Department of Justice will always work tirelessly to protect the integrity of the election process,” U.S. Attorney Sean Costello said.

Northern District of Alabama Prim Escalona also announced last week that an unnamed assistant U.S. attorney was appointed as a district election officer for her office.
