Former Moody Mayor Bill Morris took down U.S. Army combat veteran Bryan Newell in Tuesday's Alabama House District 50 Republican primary.

According to the Secretary of State's reporting, Morris received 3,413 votes (69.74%) compared to Newell's 1,481 votes (30.26%).

In addition to mayor, Morris has served as general manager of Leeds Water Works, a member of the St. Clair County Board of Education, a member of the Central Alabama Water Board and a member of the St. Clair County Republican Executive Committee.

The seat became empty due to State Rep. Jim Hill (R-Moody) not seeking reelection.

Morris will square off with Democrat nominee Alan Thomas, who ran unopposed, in the November 3 general election.
