The city of Birmingham's interim police chief has been appointed to the post permanently.
Mayor Randall L. Woodfin on Thursday announced Scott Thurmond's change in status in a news release. The new role is effective June 24, he said.
Thurmond has served as interim chief since January.
“Since day one, Chief Thurmond has demonstrated that he is a compassionate leader and an advocate for our officers and residents,” Woodfin said. “There is no need to look any further. He is the right man for the job. He will serve our city well.”
Thurmond replaced former Chief Patrick Smith, who resigned in January after more than three years at the helm.
Thurmond is a 23-year veteran of the force. He began his career in the patrol division at the North Precinct where he served the Titusville and Smithfield communities from 1999 to 2005. He was promoted to sergeant and lieutenant before serving a stint as interim commander of the department's newly formed Robbery/Homicide Division. He later was promoted to captain and served as West Precinct Commander in the Patrol Bureau. Most recently, he served as the executive assistant to the deputy chief of the Investigative Bureau.

I have simply just wanted to serve and protect the great people of Birmingham with excellence and compassion. This platform will allow me to partner with our brave officers in helping to create a safe Birmingham for all. I look forward to serving.”
