The Birmingham Police Department is investigating after someone shot into the Family Court building at 120 2nd Court North in downtown.
Police arrived on the scene Thursday morning around 9:10 a.m. after receiving the call of shots fired. It appeared someone from the outside of the building shot into a door and several windows.
No one was hit by gunfire, but one woman was struck by shattered glass, said Jefferson County Commission's Helen Hays.
Hays told 1819 News the Commission office is fully cooperating with Birmingham Police in the investigation.
Detectives believe the perpetrator shot at someone from the parking lot. They said they did not believe the building or anyone inside was the intended target.
"We believe this is an isolated incident not connected to any courthouse official or courthouse function," said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
No arrests have been made.
Family Court in Birmingham handles any case involving children. These can include cases involving child support, paternity or children needing supervision. There are often children in and around the building.
