The Birmingham Police Department made the first arrest under Alabama's new machine gun conversion "Glock Switch" law, and the suspect is a teen.
The 15-year-old man was in possession of a Glock handgun and a Glock switch. He was arrested on Monday.
Police were called to the 4700 block of 9th Terrace North regarding a suspicious vehicle. That's when Special Enforcement Team (SET) officers made contact with the teen. BPD's Felony Assault Unit detectives also investigated the incident and took the teen into custody.
SET officers presented the case to the Jefferson County Juvenile Magistrate's Office.
The suspect is at the Jefferson County Youth Detention Center. He will not be identified because he is not being charged as an adult, and his case will not be made public.
The new law, signed by Gov. Kay Ivey last week, prohibits persons from possessing a part or combination of parts designed or intended to convert a pistol into a machine gun, making it a Class C felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison for those charged as an adult.
