A law enforcement officer turned himself into Jefferson County Jail on Sunday following a domestic assault investigation.

The Birmingham Police Department (BPD) was informed of an assault involving one of its own officers on November 19. This immediately led to an internal investigation.

Special Victim’s Section detectives obtained a warrant for Brandon A. Smith’s arrest. He has been charged with domestic violence strangulation.

Smith has worked for the BPD since 2016, serving in the Patrol Division. When the investigation began, the BPD relieved Smith of his duties.

According to a press release, the BPD intends to hold all officers accountable and uphold a high moral standard for Birmingham public employees.

This is an ongoing investigation.
