Birmingham Stallions quarterback J’Mar Smith is out for the USFL season after breaking a finger on his left hand late in the first half of the season-opening win over the New Jersey Generals.

Smith was moved to the injured reserved list by the Stallions, who made the announcement late Wednesday night.

Smith threw for 160 yards in the first half, including a 61-yard touchdown pass to Austin Watkins on the team’s first offensive snap of the season. Alex McGough came in, threw a 6-yard touchdown pass on his first play and finished out the 27-10 win.

McGough becomes the Stallions starter with Jalen Morton, a 6-foot-4, 223-pounder from Prairie View A&M, moving into the backup role. McGough started in five of the team’s 12 games during last season’s USFL championship run. McGough came off the bench after Smith was hurt in the championship game and led the Stallions to the win.
