A Birmingham woman is facing multiple charges after a robbery, police chase and crash.
Kaudija Shondrelle Haynes, 32, was arrested Friday in connection to a robbery reported at the Leeds Chick-fil-A.
Leeds Police responded to the robbery at 1808 Ashville Road. Upon arrival, they were met by drive-thru staff who said a woman had pulled up and demanded cash while holding mace at an employee. After receiving a currency bag, the suspect “recklessly exited the parking lot putting other employees’ lives in danger,” police said.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) responded and detectives tracked Haynes to Wind Creek Wetumpka. Police believe she was gambling with the money she stole.
After collaborating with the Wetumpka Police Department and the Poarch Creek Tribal Police Department, Haynes was located. Police said she led them on a chase, which ended in a crash.
Haynes was taken into custody and placed in the Elmore County Jail. She is facing charges of attempting to elude, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. She will be transferred to the St. Clair County Jail on charges of first-degree robbery, reckless endangerment and fourth-degree theft of property.
“We are proud that none of the employees or customers were injured,” said Leeds Police chief Paul Irwin. “This individual endangered employees while fleeing and when she attempted to elude law enforcement in Wetumpka. She put others in danger and could have killed herself."
“It shows that addiction will cause someone to do anything to gamble or use drugs,” he continued. “Our employees immediately took action once this occurred to identify, locate and communicate with other dedicated law enforcement officers to bring this individual to justice.”
Irwin expressed appreciation for the assistance from other agencies.
“Teamwork and Cooperation is what makes communities safe!” he added.
