A Birmingham woman charged with capital murder in the death of her boyfriend’s child pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and will serve a year and a half in prison.
Tykeila Johnson pleaded guilty to reckless manslaughter in the death of 19-month-old Kar’Mynn Beachelle Gaines.
Gaines was rushed to the hospital on Nov. 16, 2020, after suffering an injury while in the care of Johnson.
The baby was hospitalized at Children’s of Alabama for 24 days and underwent multiple surgeries. Gaines was taken off life support on Dec. 10, 2020.
According to court documents, Johnson was sentenced to 10 years split with 18 months to serve in the Alabama Department of Corrections. She will serve three years of probation upon release.
