A Blount County man convicted of first-degree rape and sexual abuse of a child under 12 was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday.

Christopher Don Parker, 38, of Oneonta, will have the possibility of parole for the rape conviction, but he was also sentenced to 15 years in prison for the sex abuse charge.

A jury found Parker guilty of the charges in November after prosecutors presented evidence that he abused two children under the age of 12 at a residence off County Highway 42. They said the children lived in a home that Parker frequently visited to smoke marijuana and methamphetamine. He spent the night on several occasions.

District Attorney Pamela Casey said Parker attacked one of the victims in the middle of the night while she was sleeping on an air mattress. The young victims testified against Parker in court.

Parker had two prior felony convictions for burglary and theft and was sentenced under Alabama's Habitual Felony Offender Act.
