U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) eagerly anticipates the final passage of the Laken Riley Act in the Senate on Monday, shortly after President Donald Trump is sworn into office.
Britt said the bipartisan support and quick movement on the bill show how unified the GOP is right now and how much influence Trump already has.
"Having served in the Senate for two years, I have never felt the unity I feel within our conference that I do right now," Britt said Sunday on Fox News Channel's "America Reports." "And you can tell that by the Laken Riley Act. You think about us being able to get that over a hurdle, one people thought was impossible."
Laken Riley was an Augusta University nursing student who was murdered in Georgia by an illegal alien last year. The Act, named in her memory, required illegal aliens who commit certain crimes to be detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and then removed from the country.
"We were able to get enough Democrats on board to get over that 60-vote threshold, and we will do final passage on Monday after President Trump is sworn in," Britt continued. "This will be one of the first things we do. We will ultimately get it to his desk. So his influence, his agenda, his vision has already influenced the Republican Senate, and we're doing things better and differently. And It's a new day."
