Following a 52-47 vote to pass a reconciliation package that provides approximately $70 billion in funding for two immigration enforcement agencies, Senate Republicans are criticizing their Democratic counterparts for delaying the much-needed support.
Among those now expressing frustration is U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery), who told 1819 News on Friday that Democrats delayed the appropriations process with "radical, dangerous demands," restricting basic immigration enforcement.
"As Chair of the Subcommittee on Homeland Security Appropriations, my mission has always been fully funding the Department of Homeland Security and paying every single man and woman who raised their hand to protect the American people and our nation," explained Britt. "Throughout the appropriations process, Democrats pushed radical, dangerous demands to reopen our borders and prevent law enforcement officers from enforcing the law."
She added, "It’s incredibly disappointing that reconciliation was necessary to fully fund DHS, but I’m thankful Republicans passed a bill that includes additional multi-year funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) to ensure the administration has the resources needed to keep American families and communities safe.
The legislation is now due to be taken up by the U.S. House of Representatives sometime next week, where Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has indicated that the funding will likely pass the chamber.
