A candidate for Butler County Sheriff posted on Facebook after being arrested for fourth-degree theft of property.

Adam Smith, a Georgiana police officer, posted, "It's not an April fools joke. They come and locked me up but I've made it out."

Smith posted a $3,000 bond and was placed on administrative leave, according to WSFA.

"I appreciate the jail staff and their professionalism," Smith continued. "I would like to also say I'm sorry for everyone who's had there vehicles, atv's and any other extremely valuable property stolen. There are real victims in this county that deserve to be heard and I promise to use your tax dollars for your benefit, and not for personal gain. I'll keep you all updated on my acquittal."

In January, Smith said he was running for sheriff because Butler County deserves law enforcement it can trust.

"Right now, too many people feel like the system works for insiders instead of the public," he said. "They feel like rules are bent for some and enforced hard on others. That's not justice — and it's not acceptable. The badge belongs to the people, not the politics. I believe in law and order, and I believe in enforcing the law fairly, firmly, and without favoritism or special treatment."

Smith is considered innocent until proven guilty.
