The Trussville community is mourning the loss of longtime educator and Cahaba Elementary School principal Joy Tyner. Tyner passed away on Tuesday morning after a battle with cancer.
"Our community is heartbroken by the passing of Cahaba Elementary School Principal Joy Tyner," stated Trussville mayor Ben Short. "Mrs. Tyner's impact on Trussville is hard to fully put into words. She was more than a principal. She was a steady presence, a caring leader, and a source of encouragement for countless students, parents, teachers, and staff members. Her love for the children of Cahaba Elementary was evident in the way she led, the way she served, and the way she made every child feel seen and valued."
"For so many families, Mrs. Tyner was part of some of the most meaningful years of their children's lives," Short continued. "She helped shape not only a school, but a community. Her legacy will live on in the students she encouraged, the educators she supported, and the many lives she touched along the way."
Short offered prayers and said Trussville is better because of Tyner's dedication to the community.
Tyner was a devoted principal with a passion for celebrating students, building relationships and pushing for excellence, according to Trussville City Schools.
"Today, our Trussville City Schools family mourns the loss of Joy Tyner, whose love for children and heart for education touched countless lives," Trussville City Schools stated. "As principal of Cahaba Elementary, Mrs. Tyner made every student feel seen, every teacher feel connected, and every family feel welcome. Her kindness, compassion, and unwavering dedication helped shape not only a school, but a community. We are forever grateful for the legacy she leaves behind and the difference she made in the lives of so many. Our thoughts and prayers are with William and all who loved her."
Tyner served as an elementary school teacher before becoming an assistant principal and then a principal. She served in the music ministry and taught young adults at First Baptist Trussville.
Tyner was diagnosed with cancer in March, months after experiencing symptoms. Her family said she is now "with her Savior and reunited with her girls and her parents."
