An anti-violence group in Mobile is calling on those attending Mardi Gras parades to turn their backs when groups of young children dancing sexually suggestive go by.

Sergeant John Young, a Mobile police officer and founding member of Men United Against Violence, said he'd seen girls as young as four years old thrusting, grinding and bending over with their bottoms exposed.

"It's gross," said Young. "It is not suitable for anyone in public, but especially juvenile children and it should not be allowed."

Young said teaching children to exhibit this behavior as a means of attention is dangerous. He said the children are dressed in skimpy costumes and inappropriate makeup. Young suggested dance troops should fire anyone teaching children how to make suggestive moves.

"Little girls should not be hyper-sexualized ever, but especially not at that age and in public," he said. "So, we're saying that it should be banned, but until it is, we're asking everyone who attends the parades to turn their backs, when this type of dancing occurs, whether it's little girls or adults."

While Men United Against Violence is planning a silent protest, Young said there should be a public outcry over the sexualization of children and teens. He believes the culture issue came from celebrities and television.

"Nothing good has come from rap culture, be it the violence that they promote for black men to commit against one another, or the self-hypersexuality, promotion of hypersexuality for young black girls," Young said.

"It's a sad statement on the failure of society and where our culture has fallen," Young continued. "I have noticed it for years but it's getting worse."

With human trafficking on the rise, Young said predators could target children in a public setting.

"The creeps run up to the barricades when these dance troops go by," he said. "These perverts are enjoying it."

Young said he plans to address his concerns with the Mobile City Council because he believes it's high time leaders speak out and defend children and families.
