Mayors and council members elected in 2020 were given an extra year in office after the Alabama Legislature extended municipal terms by one year to offset local elections from presidential or state elections. Now, the end of those extended terms is a year away.

Candidates for most municipal elections were allowed to begin campaigning and raising money on August 26, and those elections will be held on Aug. 26, 2025. Candidates will qualify from June 10 – 24, 2025.

Two cities have opted to hold elections on different dates. The League of Municipalities confirmed that Tuscaloosa will hold elections on the first Tuesday in March, and Dothan will hold elections on the first Tuesday in August for the mayor and three commission seats.

Terms for municipal seats will be four years.
