HUNTSVILLE— Hundreds of protesters filled the city of Huntsville's Medical District Saturday to take part in a "No Kings" protest.
Shortly before 9 a.m, attendees began lining Governors Drive, holding signs and flags while breaking out in chants critical of President Donald Trump, Republicans, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Many of the signs bore messages such as "Donald Trump rapes kids," "Kristi kills puppies," "Hands off our freedoms" and "Trump is Epstein."
1819 News spoke to two activists, proudly displaying the flag of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), about why they joined the "No Kings'"protest.
"Right now the Supreme Court is looking to kill the very last final section of the Voting Rights Act, and once that's gone, every single person of color in especially in the red zones, are going to have no representation whatsoever," the first protestor lamented.
"What do you think that's going to mean for our democracy? It means it's over, it's done, it's gone. And the reason that we're out here holding this flag is because it's the system functioning working as intended."
"We need to push the Democratic Party more to left in order to fight Trump," he added.
The second man, wearing a black ski mask, defended communism and attacked capitalism as a means to 'breed hatred and bigotry.'
"I'm here for the liberation of humanity," he stated. "People might see this flag and think something negative. Think about the living standards of the people in those countries. You know, the Soviet Union went from a futile backwater to putting people in space in 40 years that was never accomplished."
"The only thing capitalism can do is breed hatred and just bigotry, because capitalism feeds upon itself, and then, as it feeds upon itself more it turns into fascism, which is the stage that we're at."
Approximately 15 No Kings rallies took place today across Alabama. In the northern portion of the state, protests were held in Athens, Florence and Guntersville.
More than 2,600 No Kings events were scheduled across the country for Saturday.
