The Office of the Attorney General has issued a cease-and-desist order to businesses selling or possessing Kratom, or products that contain mitragynine and/or hydroxymitragynine.

After independent testing of products statewide, Attorney General Steve Marshall issued the order. Kratom was officially listed as a Schedule I controlled substance in 2016 and is illegal to possess, sell or offer for sale.

"Alabama will not be a marketplace for dangerous, illegal substances regardless of what they are called or how they are packaged," said Marshall. “These products prey on unsuspecting consumers, including children, who have no way of knowing what they are purchasing. We are putting every retailer on notice that they need to remove these products immediately. Those who choose to ignore this order will face the full force of the law, including seizure of assets and felony prosecution."

Products containing Kratom are marketed as "Boujee Bliss," "Better Weather" and "Happy Hour."

Marshall’s office said not all products list dangerous ingredients. They urged consumers to be cautious.
