Michael "Buzz" Davis, the childhood friend of a former University of Alabama basketball player, was found guilty Friday in the shooting death of 23-year-old Jamea Harris.
Davis was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Prosecutors said Davis shot into the Harris' Jeep Wrangler hours after a basketball game on Jan. 15, 2023.
They called the shooting an ambush.
Harris was with her boyfriend, Cedric Johnson, and her cousin, Asia Humphreys. As they were leaving downtown Tuscaloosa, they saw Davis dancing in the street. Davis was out with his friends who were basketball players. Johnson rolled down the window of the Jeep and told Davis to leave Harris and Humphreys alone.
An altercation ensued, and Davis told investigators he saw that Johnson had a firearm. Darius Miles, Davis' childhood friend, texted another friend and told him to bring his gun to the location. Miles and Davis then approached the Jeep, and gunfire was exchanged. Harris was struck in the face.
Miles is also charged with capital murder. His trial date has not been set.
Both have been named in a wrongful death lawsuit.
EDITOR'S NOTE: This story has been corrected to state Michael Davis was a friend of a former University of Alabama basketball player. He was not a basketball player himself, as originally reported.
