Xiaoqin Yan, the Chinese woman convicted of arson and possessing a firearm by an illegal alien and sentenced to eight and a half months in prison, could now face up to five years after she escaped prison.

Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut Marc H. Silverman said Yan escaped from the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury (FCI Danbury) on Dec. 10, 2024, and was recaptured the same day.

Yan was being held in the facility after being convicted of setting multiple fires inside the First Baptist Church in downtown Montgomery on Sept. 30, 2021.

She was arrested a few days later in the Montgomery home where she was living. Federal agents determined she was in the United States illegally due to overstaying her non-immigrant visa.

She was found guilty on the charges in 2023.

The 31-year-old now faces five years in prison for escape from the custody of the Attorney General.
