In the runoff for Homewood City Council Ward 3, Chris Lane defeated John Manzelli. Lane ran on a platform of prioritizing public safety and restoring public trust.
Lane won the Ward 3 race with 749 votes to Lane’s 688 votes, according to the city.
On the eve of the election Lane wrote, "From the beginning, this has been about Restoring Trust in the City We Love. At first, that meant bringing transparency and accountability back to City Hall. But over the last few weeks, restoring trust has taken on a bigger meaning."
Explaining, "It now means restoring trust that our neighborhoods are safe, trust that neighbors will stand with one another, and trust that Homewood will remain the very best place to live, work, and raise a family."
Public safety took center stage during the election with Lane committing to take action.
The victory means that the more progressive candidates were kept from a clean sweep of the council race this year. However, they won three out of four races.
Following a city referendum to change the city’s form of government and shrink the size of the council from 11 to four. Each will be designated to represent one of four wards.
Manzelli was a first-time candidate who became active in city politics during a public fight against a proposed development by Samford University.
Lane is a longtime resident who ran for mayor in 2020. He founded the C Lane Company, a Homewood-based business recognized as one of the Southeast’s leading produce distributors.
