The Birmingham City Council voted at a special-called meeting on Thursday to ratify a purchase agreement to buy the Birmingham Water Works Board (BWWB) assets despite a new law changing it into a regional board being signed into law on Wednesday.

According to WBRC, the City would, under the purchase agreement under discussion, assume the BWWB’s liabilities and assets for a purchase price of $1.

Birmingham City Council president Darrell O’Quinn told the WBRC that the action wasn’t too late after Gov. Kay Ivey signed a bill changing how the board is governed on Wednesday.

“I don’t think so. Look, we’re going to take every action possible to fight this takeover, the stealing of an asset from the citizens of Birmingham. So we’re gonna do everything we can until every option is exhausted,” O’Quinn told WBRC.
