The City of Montgomery recently gave an up to $15,000 matching grant to Montgomery City Councilman Andrew Szymanski's new bar, Rick E's on Court St.
Through the City's storefront improvement grant program, seven local businesses were awarded matching funds to "upgrade their façades, modernize interiors, and make improvements that strengthen the city's growing sense of place."
Administered by the Department of Community & Economic Development through its ACCESS Montgomery initiative, the program provides up to $15,000 in 50% matching grants to help small business owners reinvest in their spaces.
One of the grants went to Rick E's, a new bar owned by Szymanski. Another grant went to Capitol City Bicycle Repair & Service, which is located in a building owned by Szymanski, according to WSFA.
According to the city of Montgomery, "each business met the City's eligibility requirements—holding valid business licenses, proof of insurance, and the ability to provide the required 50-percent financial match. Applications were evaluated through a transparent process that prioritized readiness, community impact, and contribution to downtown's economic vitality."
"These grants not only beautify our city center, they strengthen the backbone of Montgomery's small-business community," said Frank Robinson, director of Economic Development. "Our intent is to partner with entrepreneurs who have demonstrated commitment to the city, and to make sure every public dollar spent helps attract more foot traffic, more jobs, and more momentum downtown."
Other grants went to 23 Court Cigar Bar, Eugene's Hot Chicken, Dreamland BBQ, Jesus City Church, and Paradigm Lounge.
