Live Nation announced last November that it would close the Oak Mountain Amphitheatre after 38 years to turn its attention to the Coca-Cola Amphitheater in Birmingham.
Monday, the City of Pelham announced it purchased the amphitheater, its parking lot and the adjoining property along the creek for $5.3 million. The purchase also includes the frontage property on AL-119, commonly called the grass parking lot. Together, the properties total 43 acres.
The current amphitheater, which opened in 1986, will be demolished before the sale's closing date, which is estimated to be June.
According to the City, a community stage could be built within the Pelham Arts & Entertainment District for performances and shows in the district.
"This is a transformational opportunity for Pelham," said city manager Gretchen DiFante in a statement. "This next chapter allows us to reimagine the area in a way that brings even more energy and vibrancy to the Pelham Arts & Entertainment District while providing amenities that enhance the experience for both residents and visitors."
"The opportunity to redevelop this site allows us to expand upon our efforts to create a thriving district that is attractive to businesses, visitors, and residents alike," said Mayor Gary Waters. "The addition of new retail, dining, and entertainment amenities, combined with inviting outdoor spaces, will further establish Pelham as a premier destination in the region."
The final concert at Oak Mountain featured Grammy-nominated artist Post Malone. According to the Shelby County Reporter, attendees received a poster celebrating the venue's 39-year history as they left. The poster included a list of many of the biggest artists who have performed there, noting that the venue has hosted over 500 shows and welcomed three million patrons from 1986 to 2024.
Live Nation's new Coca-Cola Amphitheater in Downtown Birmingham will be a 9,300-capacity venue, scheduled to open this Summer.
