A Cleburne County Sheriff’s Office deputy was injured Wednesday during a rescue operation on the Pinhoti Trail.

The deputy and other first responders were en route to the location of two female hikers who were lost. The deputy was transported to the hospital for treatment and has since been released.

The two hikers were successfully escorted back to safety with the help of the Oxford Police Department’s Aviation Unit. The Hollis Fire Department, Heflin Police Department, Cleburne County EMS and Cleburne County 911 assisted.

“The quick response and teamwork between our deputies and the assisting agencies made all the difference,” said Sheriff Jon Daniel. “I want to commend everyone involved for their dedication and professionalism, and we are grateful the hikers were located and returned safely.”

Hikers are advised to prepare before heading into remote areas and to notify someone of their plans in advance.
