The U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama announced federal indictments against two Colombian nationals charged with drug crimes.

Cristian Yesid Lugo-Beltran, 24, and Johan Leandro Zapata-Velancia, 23, are charged with conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute cocaine and possession with the intent to distribute cocaine.

Court documents show the two were pulled over on Interstate 65 in Shelby County on February 6. Law enforcement discovered five kilograms or more of cocaine in the vehicle.

The Calera Police Department, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency and Homeland Security investigated the case.

Lugo Beltran and Zapata-Velancia are considered innocent until proven guilty.
