The Columbiana Police Department is investigating after an officer was shot during a welfare check on Saturday.
Police were conducting a welfare check at the Columbiana Villas when the suspect fired at officers, striking one of them. Officers fired back, and the suspect retreated into the apartment. Multiple agencies, including the Shelby County Sheriff's Office and the Alabaster Police Department, responded.
The suspect was eventually taken into custody.
"Thankful for our officer's safety and all other local agencies that assisted during this situation," said Mayor Lisa Davis. "Extremely grateful that this was resolved safely and the scene is now secure."
The injured officer was taken to the hospital and has been released. The suspect has not been identified.
