The state can strike one name off the list of potential candidates for U.S. Sen Tommy Tuberville’s (R-Auburn) soon-to-be-vacant spot in the Senate after U.S. Rep. Dale Strong (R-Monrovia) confirmed to 1819 News that he would not seek the seat.
Although it’s been just over a day since Tuberville announced his gubernatorial aspirations, rumors have already begun swirling about who would seek his spot in the U.S. Senate.
Many of the state’s Republican congressmen are naturally rumored to be de facto candidates, as they already have legislative experience in Washington, D.C. and enjoy a level of name recognition among constituents.
On Wednesday, Strong, one of the more talked-about potential candidates, confirmed to 1819 News that he would not seek the open seat, citing his pivotal committee appointments that he believes would make him the most effective.
“You know, I’m on Appropriations, and I think I can probably best serve, not just North Alabama, but the State of Alabama by staying on the committees I’m on,” Strong said. “I wish the rest of the field the best of luck.”
He continued, “I’m pleased to be where I am right now and feel that this is where I’m led to be, and I just really haven’t had an urge to do that. I wish Coach the best. He and Katie [Britt] have worked well together, and I look forward to working with whoever the people of the state of Alabama elect to serve in that position.”
