ALBERTVILLE — Corey Hill has officially kicked off his campaign for Alabama Agricultural and Industries Commissioner.

More than 200 people showed up to help his campaign launch Thursday evening at Papa Dubi’s in Albertville.

Standing on an empty milk crate, Hill addressed the crowd, explaining the vital role the Ag Commissioner plays in the state, especially when it comes to food safety. Hill said having safe food to eat was more than a health issue.

“I'll give you a quick story about food safety…So, one time during COVID, there was an issue with bag salad, and we couldn't get any. I mean, there was none. No brand had any. Some kind of E. coli issue out and wherever they grow it. I assume California. We couldn't get bag salads. So you think about economic impact or something like that?" he asked.

“It’s bad enough if somebody gets sick or dies, or those kinds of things. That's bad enough. And we need to keep those things in check because of that," Hill added. "But you got the farm wherever it's at, can't grow the food because there's an issue. You got the labor there that's not getting paid because they can’t work. You got the trucks hauling the stuff back and forth. You got the guy making the plastic bag. You got the warehouse, like we buy from Mitchell grocery. They can't stock and sell it, so they're not making money. We can't put it on our shelves; I'm not making the money. And the soccer moms who buy are all gaining weight because they can't eat salads. So everybody loses.”

Hill encouraged everyone to go vote in the November election, citing the “terrible voter apathy” seen in Tuesday’s municipal elections.

“I want you to tell all your friends and neighbors across the state that I’m qualified, if you believe I am. If you don't think I am, then don't tell him anything,” he joked.
