The Alabama Forestry Commission’s Rural Bridge Grant Initiative is underway to help upgrade infrastructure in rural areas.
The Alabama Legislature passed the Rural Logging Efficiency Act of 2023 to fund the project.
In some rural areas, timber trucking operations have to be rerouted due to insufficient bridges.
The Rural Bridge Grant may be used for the maintenance, repair, replacement and construction of rural public bridges. Local matching funds would complement the grant.
“The Alabama Forestry Commission is excited to offer this innovative economic resource, which will benefit all levels of the forestry sector and signals a commitment to our state’s rural economy,” said State Forester Rick Oates. “We extend our gratitude to Governor Kay Ivey and the Alabama Legislature for their support in providing these necessary funds. We anticipate receiving applications that align with our goal to enhance transportation routes by upgrading substandard bridges, ultimately reducing costs, and providing new efficiencies for timber owners and businesses.”
Counties can apply for a grant of up to $400,000 until March 15.
