Judge Matt Fridy of Pelham suffered a major heart attack Wednesday.
At the time of this report, Fridy is in Baptist Health Shelby Hospital in Alabaster, near his home. He is in intensive care.
Fridy is a judge on the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals. He is a former two-term State Representative representing Shelby County.
The announcement of Fridy’s heart attack was made at Wednesday’s opening of the Alabama House Judiciary Committee by its chairman, State Rep. Jim Hill (R-Moody). Fridy had served on that committee when he was a member of the House.
Hill raised a prayer for Fridy at the committee meeting.
“When you have a massive heart attack and you’re in intensive care, that trumps every single thing we’re doing in here this afternoon,” Hill said.
“We just love Matt, who we’ve known for so long. We think so much of him. He’s such a value to this state. He was a value to this state when he was in this legislature. He is a value to this state on the Court of Civil Appeals,” he added.
Fridy had been a lawyer with Birmingham’s Wallace-Jordan firm. He had run unsuccessfully for state chairman of the Alabama Republican Party.
Fridy was first elected to State House District 73 in 2014, representing Alabaster, Helena, Montevallo and Pelham. It was very much a home district for Fridy as he lives in Pelham and graduated from the University of Montevallo. He now serves on the University’s Board of Trustees at Montevallo.
He was re-elected in 2018 but served only two years of that term. In 2020, statewide voters elevated him to the Court of Civil Appeals, where he still serves.
1819 News will continue to report the condition of Judge Matt Fridy. He and his family are in our prayers.
