With the ongoing government shutdown now in its 31st day, U.S. Rep. Dale Strong (R-Monrovia) criticized his Democrat colleagues for catering to the far left and using everyday Americans as pawns to achieve their political goals.

Strong said that despite the possibility of troops and essential workers going unpaid, Democrats in the upper chamber have now voted against a measure to reopen the government 13 times.

"Senate Democrats continue to use the American people as ‘leverage’ for their $1.5 trillion wish-list of radical demands instead of reopening the government," Strong argued. "Democrats would rather appease their far-left base and be seen as ‘obstructing Trump’ than ensure our troops are paid and the American people have access to essential services."

"Every day this shutdown continues, hardworking taxpayers in North Alabama are forced to bear the burden. It’s time for Democrats to give up on their political game and do what’s right for the American people,"  the lawmaker added.

The current government shutdown is the second-longest in American history, with the longest lasting from December 22, 2018, to January 25, 2019. That shutdown was the result of a disagreement between President Donald Trump and Congress regarding funding for a border wall.
