A 27-year-old nurse was shot and killed Tuesday while walking to her car after her shift at DCH Regional Medical Center.

Ada Doss, a wife and mother, was shot during what authorities believe was an attempted robbery. The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit is investigating.

Officials later announced the arrest of 41-year-old Mathew James Taylor. A DCH spokesman said Taylor was suffering from a mental health crisis. They said he was dropped off earlier in the day by a family friend because he had asked for help.

The Tuscaloosa Sheriff’s Office said Taylor attempted to rob another woman in the parking lot before allegedly shooting Doss. The woman was already in her vehicle and drove away.

Taylor then approached Doss and tried to take her purse at gunpoint, the Tuscaloosa Sheriff’s Office said. Investigators said Doss was shot one time and died immediately. Detectives said there were witnesses during the incident.

Taylor was taken into custody and charged with capital murder. He is considered innocent until proven guilty.

DCH has heightened security measures and said crisis teams are available for employees.
