Citizens wanting a say in their city government have that chance on municipal election day, August 26, in most Alabama cities. But to exercise that say, you must be registered to vote. For a person not registered, the deadline is Monday, August 11.

The quickest and easiest way to register to vote is electronically. Go online here.

Those preferring to register in person should go on Monday during business hours to their county voter registrar's office, often located in the county courthouse.

Registration is needed by the Monday deadline if you:

1. Register to vote for the first time

2. Change/Update your voting information (name, address, etc.)

3. Re-register to vote if you’ve been removed from the active voter list for any reason

To be eligible to vote in Alabama, you must be a citizen of the United States, reside in Alabama, and be 18 years old on or before election day. You must not be barred from voting due to a disqualifying felony conviction or due to being judged mentally incompetent by a court of law.

Alabama’s top election official, Secretary of State Wes Allen, said, "The right of eligible United States citizens to cast a ballot in a fair and secure election is one of the hallmarks of our constitutional republic. I encourage all eligible Alabama citizens to register to vote and to exercise that right on August 26th.”

August 26 is city election day in most Alabama towns and cities. The following cities do not have their city election on August 26 but on various dates set locally.

  • Auburn
  • Bessemer
  • Dothan
  • Gadsden
  • Huntsville
  • Montgomery
  • Scottsboro
  • Tuscaloosa
