The Birmingham Police Department is investigating a deadly collision between a train and a minivan. Jefferson County Coroner Bill Yates said two women were killed and four juveniles were injured.
The collision occurred in the 1000 block of 24th Street SW, at 1:46 a.m. on Friday.
Carolyn Elain Berry, 47, and Aldereka Laqulla Ikes, 36, both of Birmingham, were killed.
Berry was pronounced dead on the scene, while Ikes was transported to UAB Hospital, where she died less than an hour after the crash.
The four children in the vehicle were transported to Children's of Alabama for treatment.
Investigators said the train struck the minivan when the driver of the vehicle attempted to drive around the railroad crossing arm.
Birmingham Police Department reminded citizens, "Whether you're walking biking or driving, always obey railroad crossing signals and gates. Trains cannot stop on a dime and one moment of impatience can change lives forever."
