A non-profit in Decatur canceled its 2025 Día De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Festival due to safety concerns.

Organizers said they made the decision “in light of the current national climate surrounding immigration status and safety concerns.”

“Our hearts are with everyone who looks forward to this beloved celebration,” said Jesse Gonzalez, Committee Chairman for Día De Los Muertos Decatur. “While this was not an easy choice, we believe it is the right one to ensure the safety and security of all participants.”

Día De Los Muertos Decatur committee is working on establishing a 501(c)(3) nonprofit status that will be known as Downtown Decatur’s Corazón y Cultura (Heart and Culture) and stated it will expand the mission to celebrate and share culture in the community.

“We are committed to making Downtown Decatur a hub of culture and community,” added Emma Martin, Communication Director at Decatur Morgan County Tourism. “This pause will allow this committee to build an even stronger foundation so that our next celebration will be bigger, more inclusive, and more vibrant than ever.”

The organization plans to put on events and “create inclusive spaces” for people to learn about Latino culture and embrace diversity. It will also offer scholarships to first-generation students.
