MONTGOMERY — The Alabama House of Representatives began showing signs of life as lawmakers returned to Montgomery for the fourth day of the legislative session.
However, House business will pick up as it goes into its fifth and sixth days, according to House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter (R-Rainsville).
Among the legislation approved in the lower chamber on Tuesday was a tax exemption on deer feed (HB87), brought by State Rep. Chris Sells (R-Greenville), and a fix for the disabled veterans' property tax exemption (HB77), sponsored by State Rep. Kenneth Paschal (R-Pelham).
The bills each passed by 79-1 and 101-1, respectively.
Paschal's legislation prohibits including state property tax liabilities in the debt-to-income ratio calculation for financing purposes.
Ledbetter spoke approvingly of the legislative day and the progress the House had made to date.
"We passed some legislation that's going to be important for the state," he said. "Certainly moved some, I think, good bills, and we'll get a chance to kind of see how the flow is. I thought the flow was very good today. Had a good discussion, some of [the bills] that need to have one on it. I feel very good about where we're at in the second week."
The DeKalb County Republican said to expect more action in the House in the coming days.
"Now we've got bills in play," Ledbetter said. "You have got to have five days to get through the total body. We've got several bills in the hopper. We'll have committee meetings tomorrow. Some of them met today. So, we'll have committee meetings the rest of this week, and next week, we should have full calendars. We did a regular order calendar today. We'll do a regular order calendar Thursday, then they'll do the pick list for Tuesday."
