If at first you don't succeed, try again.

Although former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones (D-Mountain Brook) pulled off one of the biggest political upsets in Alabama history against Roy Moore in 2017, his effort to hold on to his U.S. Senate seat against Tommy Tuberville did not go as well.

Tuberville defeated the incumbent Jones in the 2020 general election by more than 470,000 votes, equating to 20% of the vote.

However, that margin may not be a deterrent for Jones to take another shot against Tuberville, but this time in the gubernatorial arena.

On Sunday, AL(dot) com's Joseph Bryant reported that Jones hinted at a run during an event Saturday in Birmingham scheduled to feature U.S. Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.). Booker had to bow out because the Senate was in session due to the pending government shutdown.

"Stay tuned," Jones replied to the crowd gathered at Parker High School.

Holy smokes! Look at what just happened… Question for Senator Jones: “Will you run for governor?” Doug Jones: “I guess I walked into that one, didn’t I? Stay tuned.” Don’t leave us hanging, @dougjones.bsky.social

Multiple Democrat-affiliated sources tell 1819 News they expect the former U.S. Senator to launch a bid for the Democratic Party's gubernatorial nomination in the coming weeks.

"Doug Jones is in," said one of the sources to 1819 News before the Birmingham event on Saturday.

If Jones enters the race, he will immediately face a significant fundraising disadvantage. Recent filings show Tuberville has raised more than $7.7 million in his bid for governor.
