Ammie Akin, who is challenging incumbent U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham), is responding to the call for Democrats to vote against her in the Republican primary.
"It's rare that I'm speechless, but wow! The vice chair of the Alabama Democratic Party is asking voters to stop me from winning," Aiken wrote on social media. "Democrat insiders are worried because they know I'm running to be a real voice for this district. Your voice. We won't let the agenda of AOC and Terri Sewell take over the Alabama way of life. But instead of political games, let's talk about what really matters: You and your family. The people of this district who work hard, keep their word, and show up every day."
Akin was referring to Alabama Democrat Party vice chair Tabitha Isner and her recent calls to action for democrat voters who will legally be eligible to vote in the Republican primary as there is no Democrat primary special election.
Isner said in a Facebook post on Tuesday:
The numbers are in and we can see who the frontrunners are in the Republican Primary on August 11. These are the folks we want to knock off the Republican ticket:
- District 1: Jerry Carl
- District 2: Rhett Marques
- District 7: Ammie Akin
Akin has spent over 25 years in education, with at least 18 of those years in upper-level school leadership. According to her LinkedIn profile, she has served as a teacher, elementary school administrator, assistant superintendent, college professor, and, most recently, interim superintendent of Briarwood Christian School.
Although she entered the race less than a month ago, campaign images and videos show her traveling throughout the expansive district. Campaign finance reports show her having raised over $122,000.
"Over the last several weeks, I have been all over the 7th district. And I have met what Washington has forgotten: It's men and women who get up early and work hard every day. It's neighbors who, they keep their word, it's families that are rooted in faith, and it's the small business owners that create opportunity every day," Akin says in the video.
"What about the teachers who shape the next generation or farmers that are truly feeding Alabama? First responders, answering the call to serve. The people of the 7th district are not the problem. The people are the greatest strength. But what they are missing, well, it isn't grit, and it isn't talent, and it certainly isn't determination. You know what it is? It's representation that matches their determination," she continued. "While political insiders want to talk about winning a campaign, the people of this district, well, they are busy. This campaign has never been about me. It is about the people of the 7th district in Alabama."
