Chief counsel for Attorney General Marshall and current AG candidate Katherine Robertson recently used left-wing demonstrations as motivation to call on state leaders to secure a sweeping 7-0 Republican congressional delegation.

Alabama’s congressional makeup is slated for a significant change come November, after a years-long court battle the state faced when it was compelled to use a federally drawn congressional map that switched a Republican seat to Democratic, giving Republicans a smaller 5-2 majority in Washington, D.C.

Earlier this month, after a special legislative session, the state paved the way for the use of a 2023 map that had previously been blocked by a federal court.

Barring any further court action, there will be a special election on Aug. 11 to choose the nominees for Congressional Districts 1, 2, 6 and 7.

The legislative and court action brought swift and harsh condemnation from Democrats in the state and across the nation.

On Saturday, buses from across the nation poured into Montgomery and Selma to protest the new map, joining state and federal lawmakers.

Among them was U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham), who called the Republicans’ efforts to use the 2023 map as an attack on black political power.

“I’m here in Selma with my colleagues! Thousands are descending on Alabama today for 'All Roads Lead to the South' National Day of Action. We are standing together to demand fair representation and fight back against attacks on Black political power. The fight for voting rights did not end on this bridge—it continues today!!!”

Robertson responded to Sewell and the protest in general, pushing for the state to not just re-secure the 6-1 map, but to sweep the state with a 7-0 Republican-dominated delegation.

“I’m sick of the photo ops. Democratic leadership has failed my hometown,” Robertson wrote. “Go 7, or go home.”
