The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) recently canceled a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service office lease in Fairhope.

According to DOGE.gov, the lease had an annual cost of $176,859, and canceling will save taxpayers $707,922. The property was 5,132 square feet. The lease was canceled on March 3.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service didn't respond to questions about the office location and whether the lease termination involved layoffs.

"The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service remains steadfast in its commitment to serving communities, tribes and conservation partners while upholding federal responsibilities with efficiency and accountability. Under President Trump's leadership, we are prioritizing strategic reforms to maximize resources, cut waste and enhance operational effectiveness across our facilities," Laury Marshall, a spokesperson for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, told 1819 News on Thursday.

"We are actively working with GSA to ensure that every facility and asset is utilized effectively and where necessary, identifying alternative solutions that strengthen our mission. These efforts reflect our broader commitment to streamlining government operations while ensuring that conservation efforts remain strong, effective and impactful."

Marshall continued, "This process is ongoing, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available."

DOGE has ended about 20 federal leases in Alabama since President Donald Trump took office in January for an estimated taxpayer savings of about $20 million.
